The Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act was originally authorized in 1984, and most recently reauthorized in 2018.
The purpose of Perkins is to
- Prepare a workforce with the academic and vocational skills needed to compete successfully in a world market
- Further develop the academic and technical skills of career and technical education students through the development and achievement of high standards
- Link secondary and postsecondary programs, and academic, vocational, and technical instruction
- Disseminate national research about career and technical education
- Provide professional development and technical assistance to career and technical educators
Goals at LWTech
- LWTech received $255,169 in Perkins funds for 2005-06. This amount was used to:
- Employ technical aides to assist professional technical students in lab settings
- Employ a tutoring coordinator to provide assistance to students with academic challenges
- Provide appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities
- Provide support for special populations in technical programs
- Provide professional development activities for professional technical faculty, counselors, and administrators
- Strengthen academic skills by providing math and English tutors in the Essential Skills Office
- Improve the use of technology and teaching expertise of professional technical faculty
- Update equipment in technical programs to meet industry standards
- Support data collection via technical program surveys
- Recruit and retain nontraditional students in technical programs
- Support curriculum revision and updates to meet industry standards
