Setting Up LWTech Okta

At LWTech we have a handy, easy-to-use dashboard where you can access all of the IT applications you use on a daily basis (Canvas, Microsoft Outlook, LionsLink, etc.) from one place. Follow the steps below to get started using your Okta Dashboard.

Starting January 31st, follow the directions below to start using MFA to log into your LWTech Okta account.

As a reminder, there are two separate logins and passwords for the Okta Dashboard and LionsLink.

Login Format:

  • 9-digit ID number (begins with 1 or 2)
  • ctcLink Password (use the Reset Password link on the sign-in page if you do not remember your password)

Set Up Steps for LWTech Okta

Follow the steps below to get started using LWTech Okta with MFA.

Having Issues Trying to Log in?

Before logging into the Okta Dashboard (lwtech.okta.com), you will first need to use the Password Reset Tool if ANY of the following applies to you: 

  • Your LWTech email was set up over 30 days ago and you did not set up your Okta account yet.
  • You are stuck on the Verify your Password screen.
    • Note: Do not keep trying to enter your password or it will lock your account! It is not the same password as your LionsLink powered by ctcLink account.
  • You tried to reset your password by clicking on Forgot Password? and when you select Receive a Code via SMS you do not receive a code.

If you are in this situation, please follow the LWTech Password Reset Directions which will allow you to set up a new LWTech password. After you have changed your password, you will be able to setup your Okta Dashboard following the directions below. 

Initial account setup is one time only, for new students. If you are a current student who has already logged into the Okta Dashboard before, you can skip the account set up steps, and start at step 2 - MFA Login Directions. 

Account Set Up Written Directions

  1. Please type lwtech.okta.com in your web browser address bar to get started.
  2. You will be directed to the new Okta Portal SignIn page. Enter your Username. For students it will be: s-firstname.lastname@lwtech.edu.Visit the LWTech IT webpage if you are unsure of your login information.
  3. Next, enter your LWTech password. Select Verify.
    1. Note: If you do not remember your password or have not set it up yet, follow the password reset directions.
  4. Next, you will need to select the Set Upbutton for bothPhone and Security Questions to access Okta and/or recover your account. First, select the Set Up button below Phone.
  5. To set up phone authentication, select if you would like to receive the verification by SMS (text) or voice call. Then add your phone number and select the button Receive a code via SMS(or Voice Call). If you do not have a phone, you could use someone else's phone or call a phone to get the code and enter it in the system.
  6. Enter the code you received on your phone and select Verify.
  7. Next select the Set Up button to establish your Security Question.
  8. You have the option to choose a security question from the drop-down menu or create your own security question. Enter the answer in the field below. Your answer must be at least 6 characters long. Once entered, select the Verify button.
  9. You will now be on the Set Up security methods page. Select Continue.
    1. Note: Setting up Okta Verify and YubiKey Authenticator is optional and are covered in later videos. Those who will be using a YubiKey for verification, should follow the directions under Setting up and Using a YubiKey.
  10. Congratulations! You are now on the Okta Dashboard where you can access all the applications you use on daily basis. Watch the next video to learn how to log into your LWTech Okta account using MFA.

If you are a current student (or a new student who already completed the initial account setup steps above) follow the directions below to log into your LWTech Okta account using MFA for the first time.

Important: A phone or YubiKey is required for MFA login. Before continuing, if you do not have a phone that can be used for MFA please reach out to the ITS Help Desk for assistance checking out a YubiKey.

MFA Login Written Directions

  1. Please type lwtech.okta.com in your web browser address bar to get started. 
  2. You will be directed to the Okta Portal SignIn page. Enter your username. For students it is s-firstname.lastname@lwtech.edu. Select Next.
  3. Next, enter your LWTech password. Select Verify.
    1. Note: If you do not remember your password, please follow the password reset directions.
  4. You will be on the Verify with your phone page. Select Receive a code via SMS to receive a text message with a code. 
    1. Note: If you are not able to receive text messages on your phone, you can select Receive a voice call instead to receive a phone call with the code.
  5. Then enter the code you receive on your phone from the text message or voice call. Select Verify.
    1. Note: If the last 4-digits of your phone number are not correct or the phone is no longer in use, please reach out to the Help Desk to reset your account.
  6. Great job! You are now on your LWTech dashboard.
  7. Optional: If you would like to have another option for verifying your identify through MFA, follow the Okta Verify directions below for set up instructions. Some faculty and staff have found this to be an easier method thanusing text or voice calls. It requires you to download the Okta Verify App on your phone.

Navigate your Okta Dashboard Written Directions

  1. You are now on the LWTech Okta dashboard where you can access all of the IT applications you use on a daily basis (Canvas, Microsoft Outlook, LionsLink, etc.) 
  2. Tip: If you want to access LionsLink powered by ctcLink from the Okta dashboard, you will need to download the Okta plug-in for every browser you use (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). Follow these instructions:
    1. At the top of the dashboard, there is a prompt to Install the Okta plugin or you will also receive a prompt when trying to access LionsLink through the dashboard tile. Select Install.
    2. Add the plug-in from your browser's extension store/downloads.
    3. Refresh the page that your dashboard is on.
    4. On the dashboard, select the LionsLink tile and follow the prompts to complete login.

Okta Verify is another option for verifying your identity when logging into your LWTech Okta account using MFA. It requires you to download an Okta Verify App on your phone. Please note that is an optional method of verification. 

Okta Verify Written Directions

  1. Log into the Okta Dashboard at lwtech.okta.com following the earlier directions.
  2. Once on the Okta Dashboard, select the caret icon in the upper right-hand corner(next to your name/account information)to expand the menu options.
  3. SelectSettingsfrom the drop-down menu.
  4. You will now be on your Account settings page.On the right-hand side, under Security Methods, select theSet up button next to Okta Verify.
  5. You will need to verify that it is you with a security method and enter your password.
  6. Once youridentityhas been verified, you will be on theSet Up Security methods page. Select the Set Up button under Okta Verify.
  7. You may be asked to verify your account again. Select either Password or Phone optionYou will be prompted to enter your password, or the code you receive on your phone.
  8. A Set Up Okta Verify page will display with a QR code. Do not close this window because you will need to scan the QR code when requested.
  9. Open the Okta Verify app on your mobile device. You will need to download the Okta Verify app from the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or Google Play (Android devices) if you do not already have it.
  10. Once on the Okta Verify App, select Organization on the Choose Account Type page.
    1. Tip:If you already have a ctcLink account through Okta Verify, you will need to select the plus buttonto add an additional account type for LWTech Okta. You will have two accounts in Okta Verify(ctcLink and LWTech Okta).
  11. Locate the QR code on your computer screen. Then select Yes, Ready to Scan. Scan the QR code with your phone.
  12. You will receive a confirmation page if your account was successfully added. Select the Done button.
  13. Now on your Okta Verify app, you should see the LWTech Okta account added. 
    1. Tip: You may have two accounts if you also previously added your LionsLink powered by ctcLink account.
  14. After scanning the QR code, you may be back on the Set up security methods page. Do not set up YubiKey Authenticator unless directed to do so by IT. Select the Set up Later or Continue button.
  15. Now when you log into your LWTech Okta account, you will have Okta Verify available as an option for authentication. If you do not see it available as an option for selection, select the hyperlink Verify with something else to view all available verification options, including Okta Verify.

If you don't have a phone that can be used for MFA, students should reach out ot the Library to check out the device (YubiKey) and employees should reach out to the Help Desk for assistance. A YubiKey is a small hardware authentication device that allows you to complete MFA by plugging it into your computers USB port and tapping it.

After you have obtained a YubiKey, complete the steps below to set up and log into your LWTech Okta account using MFA. 

YubiKey Written Directions

  1. Please type lwtech.okta.com in your web browser address bar to get started.
  2. You will be directed to the new Okta Portal Sign In page. Your username will be the same as it is now (students: s-firstname.lastname@lwtech.edu).Visit the LWTech IT webpage if you are unsure of your login information.
  3. Next, enter your LWTech password. Select Verify.
    1. Note: If you do not remember your password, please follow the password reset directions.
  4. Next, you will need to select the Set Up button for both Phone and Security Questions to access Okta and/or recover your account. First, select the Set Up button below Phone.
    1. Note: Setting up phone authentication is one time only. If you do not have a phone, you may be able to borrow someone elses phone or use a landline phone, such as a classroom phone.
  5. To set up phone authentication, select if you would like to receive the verification by SMS (text) or voice call. Then add your phone number and select the button Receive a code via SMS to get a text message with the code. Or if you are using a landline phone or a phone that cannot receive text messages, select Voice Call and you will receive a phone call with the code.
  6. Enter the code you received on your phone and select Verify.
  7. Next select the Set Up button to establish your Security Question.
  8. You have the option to choose a security question from the drop-down menu or create your own security question. Enter the answer in the field below. Your answer must be at least 6 characters long. Once entered, select the Verify button.
  9.  You will now be on the Set up security methods page. Select the Set up button below YubiKey Authenticator. Do not select Continue.
  10. Take your YubiKey and plug it into one of your computers USB ports. Once inserted, the YubiKey will start to flash. Tap the yellow circle with your finger. A code will automatically be entered and verified.
  11. You will be back on the Set up security methods page. Select Continue
    1. Note: Do not select Set up for Okta Verify, as it requires a phone for validation.
  12. Congratulations! You are now on the Okta Dashboard and have set up your YubiKey for account verification.
  13. Now when you log into your LWTech Okta account, you will have YubiKey available as an option for authentication. If you do not see it available as an option for selection, select the hyperlink Verify with something else to view all available verification options, including YubiKey.
  14. Then insert and tap your YubiKey to authenticate. A code will automatically be entered and verified.
    1. Tip: If tapping the YubiKey does not work, try reinserting it into the computer and trying again.
  15. You will now be on the Okta Dashboard where you can access all the applications you use on a daily basis.
    1. Be sure to keep your YubiKey safe, as you will need to use it each time you log in to LWTech Okta using MFA.
