Program Information

Pain control in dentistry requires the study of local anesthesia nitrous oxide and an understanding of nerve conduction and pain. This course is designed to expand your basic dental hygiene knowledge in pain control and in head and neck anatomy. It also provides additional didactic information and clinical experience in the administration of local anesthetic agents. To successfully complete this course students will demonstrate clinical competency in both local anesthesia techniques and nitrous oxide sedation.

The fundamentals of local anesthetic administration techniques are presented in this eight week course. Topics covered include; topical anesthetics, dose considerations, inadequate anesthesia, anatomical factors and medical emergencies related to the delivery of local anesthesia.

This eight week course includes seven weeks independent online study with four online quizzes. Course materials and assignments are provided via the Canvas online course management system. Week eight is a three-day (approx. 24 hour) intensive clinical hands-on practical experience where students learn to administer local anesthetic and nitrous oxide.

Approximately 10-15 hours of independent study. The WREB written anesthesia exam is extremely challenging, and study time should be taken seriously. This is a graded two-credit course. Evaluation and assessments will be completed through written pre-tests and post-tests, lab feedback/proficiencies and a mock Board practical exam.

All Continuing Education classes are subject to change depending on enrollment.
